Grammy Awards 2014: Awards Night Performances To Watch

Grammy Awards 2014: Awards Night Performances To Watch. Two Beatles (Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr), one kiwi (cool new girl Lorde) and a pair of French robots (the electronic producers Daft Punk) make up some of the stars scheduled to perform at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards 2014.

1. Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams, Stevie Wonder and Nile Rodgers: Arguably the most star-studded ensemble on the lineup, this will be Daft Punk’s first live gig since the release of their Grammy-nominated album, “Random Access Memories,” which features Mr. Rodgers. It’s also Daft Punk’s first TV performance since they played with Kanye West at the 2008 awards. Pharrell Williams, who appears on Daft Punk’s summer hit “Get Lucky,” is nominated for seven awards, tying him for second with Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Kendrick Lamar. Jay Z dominates with nine nominations.

2. Lorde: The 17-year-old New Zealand native became a pop sensation last year and is nominated for four awards, including song of the year for her hit “Royals.” She’s been brainstorming outfits for her debut Grammy performance on Instagram, including pictures of witch-inspired black dresses and an ensemble of Siberian bear-hunting armor. This will likely be a show-stopper.

3. Metallica and Lang Lang: Los Angeles rockers Metallica aren’t strangers to unlikely collaborations. The band’s 1999 album “S&M” featured the San Francisco Symphony, and in 2011 it produced an album with Lou Reed that featured mostly spoken words (the latter was widely panned; writer Chuck Klosterman likened it to having schizophrenia and a migraine). Metallica hasn’t performed at the Grammys since 1991, so it’s hard to say how this year’s mash-up with pianist Lang Lang will be received, but for classical music fans, it’s a walk on the wild side.

4. Gary Clark Jr.: Often hailed as the future of blues, the 29-year-old Austin guitarist gained momentum in 2011 with his breakout EP “Bright Lights.” His first major album, “Blak and Blu,” was released in October and hit the top of the Blues chart. He’s nominated for best rock song for “‘Ain’t Messin’ Around” and best traditional R&B performance for “Please Come Home.”

5. Jay Z and Beyonce: The Recording Academy hasn’t confirmed that the couple will perform together, but both their names were included in a commercial advertising the telecast that aired on CBS Jan. 19. Beyonce recently performed a private White House concert for First Lady Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday, but the Grammy performance will be her first since releasing her surprise, self-titled visual album in December.

Grammy Awards 2014: Metallica to Play ‘Completely Insane’ Version of ‘One’ with Pianist Lang Lang

Grammy Awards 2014: Metallica to Play ‘Completely Insane’ Version of ‘One’ with Pianist Lang Lang. In a new chat with Rolling Stone, guitarist Kirk Hammett revealed that they’ll be playing a transformed version of the classic hit One.

Hammett:
“It’s gonna be completely insane…Lang Lang has interjected himself into the song in a way I don’t think anyone else has ever done in the course of our career. He’s going to be playing major parts of the song. He’s going to be playing through the melody.
He’s going to be weaving in and out of my guitar solos, which is amazing for me, because I’ve never played with another instrument that’s been able to do that so effortlessly.

Be sure to tune into Grammy Awards 2014 on CBS on Sunday, January 26 to see what all the fuss is about. Here’s the band’s original music video for One:

GRAMMYs 2014 Preview: Album of the Year

A closer look at the releases that earned album of the year nominations for the 56th Grammy Awards on Jan. 26, 2014. These five artistic statements are in the running for the album of the year honor at the GRAMMYs Awards 2014.

http://grammyawards2014.blogspot.com/"The Blessed Unrest"
Sara Bareilles
Producers: Sara Bareilles, Mark Endert, John O'Mahony
Engineers/mixers: Jeremy Darby, Mark Endert, John O'Mahony
Mastering engineer: Greg Calbi
Label: Epic Records

Bareilles' 2010 album, Kaleidoscope Heart, helped prove she wasn't a pop personality to underestimate. But for the California native's third studio release, The Blessed Unrest, the singer/songwriter decided to start anew by moving to New York and leaning more on co-writers, including fun.'s Jack Antonoff. The lyrically daring and serious-sounding set debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Bareilles is also nominated for best pop performance for the single "Brave," which reached No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100.

GRAMMYs Awards 2014 Preview: Record of the Year

A closer look at the songs that earned record of the year nominations for the 56th GRAMMY Awards. These songs are all vying for record of the year at the GRAMMYs Awards 2014 on Sunday night.

"Get Lucky"
Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams
Producers: Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo
Engineers/Mixers: Peter Franco, Mick Guzauski, Florian Lagatta, Daniel Lerner
From: Random Access Memories
Label: Daft Life/Columbia

Daft Punk first teased its long-awaited fourth album, "Random Access Memories," by playing snippets of lead single “Get Lucky” on “Saturday Night Live” and at the Coachella festival last spring. When the full single was released April 19, pop fans got to soak in Nile Rodgers’ disco-funk guitar, Pharrell Williams’ sinuous vocal performance and Daft Punk’s delirious robo-breakdown in full -- and “Get Lucky” promptly became one of the year’s most inescapable hits. The mysterious French duo’s groove-filled electronica has been recognized by the Grammy Awards previously, with early singles like “Da Funk” and “Around the World” earning best dance recording nods and the live album Alive 2007 winning best electronic/dance album in 2009. However, Daft Punk’s biggest hit to date -- “Get Lucky” peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 -- garnered the pair’s first record of the year nomination.

"Radioactive"
Imagine Dragons
Producer: Alex Da Kid
Engineers/Mixers: Manny Marroquin, Josh Mosser
From: Night Visions
Label: Kidinakorner/Interscope

After “It’s Time,” the lead single from Imagine Dragons’ 2012 debut "Night Visions," crept up to No. 15 on the Hot 100 (generally uncharted waters for a new rock act), “Radioactive” performed even better, peaking at No. 3. Mixing throttling percussion and dubstep wobbles with an intense rock coda, “Radioactive” stayed at No. 1 on the Hot Rock Songs chart for a record-breaking 23 weeks and ultimately became the genre’s biggest hit of 2013, just three years after Imagine Dragons was covering Led Zeppelin songs in Las Vegas casinos. Like the majority of "Night Visions," “Radioactive” was produced by Alex Da Kid, best-known for his work on hip-hop/pop fusions like B.o.B’s “Airplanes” (featuring Hayley Williams) and Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” (featuring Rihanna), the latter nominated for record of the year at the 2011 Grammys. “Radioactive” is also up for best rock performance.

GRAMMY Awards 2014 Preview: Song of the Year

A closer look at the stellar tunes that earned song of the year nominations for the GRAMMY Awards 2014.

"Just Give Me a Reason"
Songwriters: Jeff Bhasker, P!nk, Nate Ruess
Performers: P!nk featuring Nate Ruess
Publishers: EMI Blackwood Music, P!nk Inside Publishing, Way Above Music, Sony/ATV Songs, WB Music, FBR Music, Bearvon Music
From: The Truth About Love
Label: RCA Records

Billboard’s Woman of the Year got her fourth No. 1 single and one of the biggest hits of her 14-year career with power ballad “Just Give Me a Reason,” a duet with fun. lead singer Nate Ruess. Co-written by fun. producer/songwriter Jeff Bhasker, the track spent three weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. “Just Give Me a Reason”—which is also nominated for best pop duo/group performance—is P!nk’s second-biggest-selling digital song behind “So What.”

"Locked Out of Heaven"

Songwriters: Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine, Bruno Mars
Performer: Bruno Mars
Publishers: Mars Force Songs, BMG Rights Management (U.S.), BMG, Roc Nation Music, Music Famamanem, EMI April Music, Toy Plane Music-Universal Music, Universal Music
From: Unorthodox Jukebox
Label: Atlantic Records

With numerous hits under their belts, Billboard’s Artist of the Year Bruno Mars and his songwriting partners the Smeezingtons (Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine) know when they’re onto a good song idea. “With ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ and its guitar riff, it was, ‘Man, there’s a good pocket on this song right now. Let’s keep going, let’s keep going,’” Mars told Billboard. Good thing they did: The lead single from Mars’ second album, Unorthodox Jukebox, was No. 1 for six weeks on the Hot 100. It’s also up for record of the year.

DaftPunk & Stevie Wonder Performs at the Grammy Awards 2014

DaftPunk & Stevie Wonder Performs at the Grammy Awards 2014. Adding to their collection of productions and performances with music legends young and old, Daft Punk will be joined on stage by Stevie Wonder, in addition to regulars Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams, for their performance at the 2014 Grammy Awards.

The 2014 Grammys will be the first Daft performance in years, and the first time they've played live in support of Random Access Memories. Rolling Stone reports that "sources" have confirmed that the legendary American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder will be stepping onto the stage with disco's new A-Team for their performance. After the obvious question of how he will fit musically into their show (our money says it's with his trusty piano) and on which tracks, what we really want to know is this: will he be issued a standard, team-Daft sequined suit? What about a Wonder-helmet, maybe with his iconic shades made futuristic with LEDs and lasers? Maybe? Either way, as the owner of more Grammys than any other male solo artist, he's a great choice for the show.

In addition to it being their first TV performance since 2008's with Kanye West, Daft Punk are up for five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Best Dance/Electronica Album for Random Access Memories and Best Pop/Group performance for "Get Lucky." Watch the Grammy Awards 2014 live performance Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. EST on CBS. (lessthan3.com)
